The ArtCamp was held in Rome from 4 to 10 May 2026 with the mission to promote a culture of peace through the integration of education in democracy and human rights, intercultural dialogue, and respect for human diversity and cultural expressions.

ArtCamps have been active for over 14 years, focusing on engaging people from conflict-affected areas living in Europe and in the Middle East. This edition was organized by the Andorran National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Diplomacy Hedva Ser, the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, the Rome campus of Temple University, and Mosaico – Azioni per i Rifugiati, with the aim of creating opportunities for cooperation and mutual understanding between the migrant community and Italian citizens through art and dialogue.

The 2026 Rome edition brought together 12 artists from Italy and from across the world, including Andorra, Cameroon, China, Egypt, Guinea, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Syria. For one week, participants shared a studio provided by the Rome campus of Temple University, producing artworks that reflect on dialogue and on their lived experiences as refugees seeking protection in Italy. Alongside studio work, the program included social events designed to foster mutual understanding and respect between the two groups: migrants and Italian citizens.

Among the week’s highlights was an encounter with Ivorian photographer Mohamed Keita, who shared his work and personal journey with the group. During the project, participants also had an opportunity to visit key cultural landmarks of Rome, including the Vatican and Palazzo Altemps, home to the National Roman Museum and the Italian National Commission for UNESCO.

The program concluded with a public exhibition of the works produced, held at Temple University’s Rome premises, offering participants, guests, and the public the opportunity to witness the outcome of a week marked by artistic collaboration, intercultural dialogue, and shared experiences. The works will subsequently travel to further venues, with UNESCO Headquarters in Paris among the planned destinations. The closing event was brought to a memorable conclusion by a musical performance from several of the participating artists.

For Mosaico – Azioni per i Rifugiati, participation in ArtCamp reflects a broader commitment to the social inclusion of refugees and migrants. By bringing together migrants and Italian citizens in a shared creative process, initiatives such as this contribute to building a more inclusive and cohesive society by raising awareness among citizens, institutions, and stakeholders on the value of diversity and the realities of forced migration. This initiative, which placed intercultural dialogue at its core, also created a space where the voices and talents of refugees and migrants could be heard and seen.

Mosaico, once again, extends its sincere gratitude to the Andorran National Commission for UNESCO, to Goodwill Ambassador Hedva Ser, to the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, and to Temple University Rome for their vision and collaboration in realizing this initiative.

Above all, Mosaico wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the twelve artists who took part in this project: Jehad Alhamad Kadam, Njiongang Detchouta, Arnau Sanchez, Buse Gümüştürkmen, Chenxi Liu, Valeria Fittipaldi, Emma Vezzoli, Hasan Graffiti, Mamadou Telly Koulemou, Moise Kabengele Mulumba, Parnian Javan, and Ahmed Mohamed, for sharing their stories, creativity and contributions, without whom this project would not have been possible.

Author: Tanja Plavšić

Mosaico – Azioni per i Rifugiati is glad to share that the second edition of UNESCO ArtCamp and Dialogue Rome 2026 has successfully concluded.
