Climate change and forced migration: the figure of the environmental refugee
Despite the now undeniable existence of a close correlation between climate change and forced migration, immigration law at the Italian, European and international levels has not yet filled this gap, as there is still no recognition of the right to asylum for environmental issues. So-called “environmental migrants” are increasing year by year as the consequences dictated by climate change become more pronounced and, therefore, an awareness is as necessary as ever. As part of the World Refugee Day 2021 events, Mosaico is proposing a panel that, through interdisciplinary dialogue among experts, will highlight the issue.

Regularization and pandemic. A comparative approach
The measures taken by the Italian government specifically having to do with the regularization of agricultural labor in response to the pandemic situation represented a major missed opportunity, opening the door to an already complex situation by adding to the previous Salvini Decree. An analysis of the consequences that have been observed on the ground for months will be offered during the proposed panel.

Africa: a common story to tell
The collective narrative of the complexity and diversity of an entire continent, that of Africa, is often reduced to the painting of a fleeing human mass, ready to invade the West. Its history written by the victors has thus turned out to be sometimes told through a subjective and superficial approach, delving little into the rich and complex history in which contemporary migration processes are rooted.
The proposed panel is intended to open a space for discussion and reflection on the issues underlying the current migrations that feature the African Continent.
Guests:
Berthin Nzonza, Mosaico – Azioni per i Rifugiati

Wool Bazaar
For the second year in a row, the Waldensian Church of Massello is organizing the “Wool Bazaar,” a sale of wool clothing and accessories made by a group of ladies knitters. The choice of “wool” as the protagonist raw material of the bazaar is not accidental: today wool well represents our necessary aspiration toward the use of natural, non-polluting products for healthy clothing and to contribute to the survival of the entire planet.
The proceeds will be used to support the implementation of a project to enhance the artistic and cultural skills of refugees from the Mosaico Association.

Presentation of “The Path” by Andrea Tridico in collaboration with Claudiana Bookstore
2019: Enoch is an Ivorian boy who has arrived in Italy and is placed in a migrant reception project of the Waldensian Church in Torre Pellice. Although he intends to leave for France, asylum application procedures force him to remain in places foreign to him.
1689: David is a Waldensian exile living in Geneva where his people took refuge following religious persecution in the 17th century. He takes part in the Glorious Repatriation thus facing the decisive battle to return to his homeland.
The two protagonists of “The Path,” Andrea Tridico’s new comic novel, are destined to bridge the centuries that separate them and meet in the Waldensian Valleys with their landscapes, their past history and their religious culture.
On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the author discusses with Berthin Nzonza (Mosaic – Actions for Refugees) and Davide Rosso (director of the Waldensian Cultural Center) how today’s condition of being a migrant is reflected in the historical dramas of diaspora and exile.
